[Class 123 (ii).] A circular or elliptical nest of water-tubes 1, extending from a frontal header 2 and surrounding a combustion chamber 2 at their front ends, are arranged very close together where they surround the combustion zone and are spaced apart at the rear to permit of free passage of gases between them. The combustion zone may be wholly or partly lined with refractory material 4. The burner 5 may be fired with gaseous liquid, or pulverulent fuel. Fig. 4 shows the furnace arranged in an inclined position in a water-tube boiler, the rear header 3 of the tube nest being connected to the rear header 7 of an inclined bank of tubes above. A steam-generator is also illustrated comprising three such furnaces arranged below two inclined banks of tubes extending from an upper central drum to two lateral drums at a lower level. In another form the rear ends of the tubes 1 are connected to a drum at the rear which is connected by a bank of forwardly-inclined tubes to an upper drum having return-tube connections to the front header 2. In a further form, the rear ends of the tubes 1 are curved upwardly and extend up to a steam drum connected by return tubes to the header 2.
