Abstract
417,963. Controlling variable - speed gearing; Bowden mechanism. JERROMES, A. E., Waterworks House, Whitacre, Coleshill, Warwickshire. June 24, 1933, No. 18052. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii).] Handle-bar control mechanism for variable gears &c. of cycles &c. comprises in combination a hand-grip sleeve a mounted on the handle-bar b so as to be rotatable and capable of a small axial displacement, a notched gate slot a<1> in the sleeve engaging a fixed pin d<1> on the handle-bar or vice versa, a spring e (e.g. of the helical compression type) on the handle-bar tending to hold the slot and pin in operative engagement, and a Bowden cable mechanism g, g<1> the cable g<1> of which is attached to the sleeve at a<5> so as to be actuated tangentially thereby. The slot a<1> may be formed with plain notches or with cam or ratchet-like notches a2, a<3>. The spring e is mounted between the sleeve a and a clip f, which has a slotted stop lug f<1> for the cable sheath g.
