Abstract
407,576. Change speed gearing. STANDARD MOTOR CO., Ltd., GRINHAM, E. G., and TURNER, W. R., Canley, Coventry. June 10, 1933, Nos. 16646 and 26466. [Class 80 (ii).] Change-speed mechanism comprises a dental member which is synchronized when moved to engagement for one speed and is not synchronized when moved to engagement for another speed. It is described as operative for bringing in the first and second speeds of a four-speed gear, the third and fourth speeds of which are brought in by a double-acting synchromesh clutch 20, Fig. 1. The dental member 12 has spline clutch teeth 16 and peripheral gear teeth. It is splined on a sleeve 25 in turn splined on the driven shaft 13. In the neutral position of Fig. 1, the sleeve 25 is locked to the dental member 12 by a spring ball 28 engaging a recess 29. When the member 12 is displaced to the left to engage second speed, the sleeve 25 is carried along by the ball 28 so that a female clutch cone 27 on the sleeve 25 is pressed into engagement with a male cone 26 upon a loose countershaft driven gear 22. This frictional engagement brings the clutch teeth 16 on the member 12 to approximately the same rotary speed as clutch teeth 17 on the gear 22. Continuing the leftward movement, the ball 28 slips out of the recess 29 and the position of Fig. 4 is realized with the teeth 16, 17 in full engagement. The member 12 is cut away internally at 33 so that this movement is free of a locking peg 31, 32. Because of the ball 28 and the peg 31, 32, the sleeve 25 must be returned to neutral along with the member 12. When the member 12 is displaced to the right to bring in the unsynchronized first speed, a shoulder 30 prevents the sleeve 25 from being carried with it. The peg 31, 32 is thrust hard into a locking recess 34 in the shaft 13 as the gear member 12 passes over the peg into mesh with a mating gear 14 on the countershaft, as shown in Fig. 3. This peg holds the sleeve in neutral while the first speed is being disengaged.
