Abstract
383,516. Overload-release clutches. TRIGGS, W. W., 57, Lincoln's Inn Fields, London.-(American Machine & Foundry Co. ; 511, 5th Avenue, New York, U.S.A.) March 23, 1932, No. 8623. [Class 80 (ii).] In a bidirectional overload-release clutch, a clutch plate 16 between the driving-member 12 and the driven member 23 has depressions co-operating with spring-pressed balls 15 in the driving-member and peripheral recesses 33 which house two sets of rollers 24, 25, one set or the other jamming between the plate 16 and a flange 22 on the driven member, according to the direction of rotation, and being positively released by projections 28 on the driving-member when relative movement between the plate 16 and the driving element occurs due to overload. The member 12 which is keyed to the driving-shaft 10 has a disc 13 pinned to it. The balls 15 are located in holes in this disc and their springs 18 are adjusted by a collar 19. The members 16, 23 are loose on the shaft 10 and the recesses 33 in the former have symmetrical inclines 26 against which the rollers are pressed by springs 27. The projections 28 are normally at the apices of the recesses 33.
