Abstract

436,016. Friction clutches. PARRY, D., Plough Inn, Eathorpe, near Leamington Spa, and ROBINSON, C. L., Burnthurst, Princethorpe, near Rugby. May 9, 1934, No. 14003. [Class 80 (ii)] In a friction clutch, balls 9 engaged in outwardly - tapering grooves 5 in a plate 3 secured to a driving member 2 contact with the adjacent plane or dished face of a presser plate 6 splined on a driven shaft 7, whereby, as the balls move centrifugally outwards as the speed of member 2 increases, the plate 6 is moved away from the plate 3 to press driven and driving friction discs 10 and 12, 13 together. The reaction of the plate 13 is taken by springs 15, and the clutch may be disengaged at any time by a fork-actuated sleeve 16 connected to the plate 13. The arrangement may be modified so that the sleeve may be moved to cause engagement at any time. The grooves 5 may be radial, inclined, or curved. Instead of grooves and balls the plate 3 may have tapering ribs on which weights are slidably mounted. Spring means, by which the balls are urged inwards or by which the plate 6 is urged towards the plate 3, may be provided.
