Abstract

494,368. Friction clutches. NORTHERN GENERAL TRANSPORT CO., Ltd., and HAYTER, G. W. July 30, 1937, No. 21140. [Class 80 (ii)] The pressure plate 5 of a plate clutch is moved to engaged position, against the action of disengaging springs, by the wedging action of balls 17 which move centrifugally outwards in obliquelydisposed radial bores 18. As shown in Fig, 2, the bores 18 are formed in the cover plate 8, secured to the driving flywheel 3 by studs 9, the driven plate 1 being arranged between the plate 5 and a plate 2 secured to the flywheel. The disengaging springs 15 are interposed between the plates 2 and 5. Bushes 10 in the plate 5 are guided on the studs 9, and, in the disengaged position, the conical end 11 of each bush 10 engages a conical recess 12 in the plate 8 so as to prevent rattling. As shown in Fig. 4, the bores 18 are arranged in the flywheel 3 and the driven plate 1 is arranged between the plate 5 and a second plate 24 which is guided on the studs 9 and which is urged to the left towards a stop ring 28 by springs 25. Movement to the right of the plate 5 is also limited by the ring 28. Disengaging springs 31 are interposed between the plates 5 and 24. Manual disengagement can be effected by moving the plate 24 to the right through radial levers 29.
