Abstract
382,283. Track brakes for vehicles. PETER, L. H., 82, York Road, King's Cross, London, and GES. FœR OBERBAUFORSCHUNG UND RANGIERTECHNIK, Europahaus am Anhalter Bahnhof, Berlin. July 21, 1931, No. 20827. [Class 103 (i).] Relates to track-braking apparatus of the type comprising brake-bars 5, 6 or the like located beside the track 4 and adapted to be brought automatically into engagement with the wheels of a vehicle by electromagnetic means so that retardation is effected by frictional and by eddy-current braking. According to the invention the apparatus is adapted for vehicles having wheels of the Mansell type, in which the flanged rim 1 of the wheel is detachably bolted to the central portion 2, by forming the face of each brakebar 5, 6 or of the shoe 7, 10 carried thereby so that it engages frictionally with the wheel and rim below the securing-bolts 3 and extends upwards above the bolts with an air gap 8, 11 between the extended portion and the bolts, through which gap magnetic flux is transmitted for the eddy-current braking. In a modification the brake-bar 5 is provided with a projection engaging in a recess on the rail 4 in order to increase the area of the path of the magnetic flux.
