381,036. Controlling change-speed gearing ; locking sliding members. FIAT SOC. ANON., 250, Via Nizza, Turin, Italy. Dec. 31, 1931, No. 36082. Convention date, Nov. 3. [Classes 80 (ii) and 80 (iii).] Change-gear control mechanism comprises a striker 4, Fig. 1, rigid with a sleeve 5 slidable on a fixed guide-rod 3 and adapted to be locked thereto automatically and to be released by the first striking movement of a control lever 8. The sleeve 5, two of which are shown selectively operable, has a gap 6, into engagement with which a ball end 7 of the lever 8 can be brought. Elbow levers 12, 12<1> shaped as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, are pivoted at 13, Fig. 2, on the sleeve 5 and biased by coil springs 15, Fig. 1, so that bent-over ends 11, 11<1> are pressed against the rod 3. The other ends 14, 14<1> of the levers 12, 12<1> project over the gap 6 so as to embrace the lever end 7. In the neutral position shown, a locking end 11 of one lever 12 engages a cam recess 10 in the rod 3, while the end 11<1> of the other lever 12<1> is pressed against the rod, so as to effect a frictional lock of the sleeve 5 to the rod 3. When the control lever end 7 is moved upwards of Fig. 2, the lock lever end 11 rides out of the recess 10 and along the rod 3 until it snaps into a locking-recess 9, a change element (not shown) having been moved to gear position by the fork 4. The control lever end 7, on being moved downwards, first presses on the elbow 14 so as to lift the lock end 11 of the lever 12 out of the recess 9. The sleeve 5 is then carried downwards until the lock end 11<1> of the lever 12<1> snaps into a locking-recess 9<1> with the change element in a fresh gear position.
