Abstract

24,177. Wlnton, A., and Anderson, H. B. Oct. 30. Link-work; variable-speed gearing. - Changespeed gearing of the selective type is interlocked with the clutch so as to ensure disengagement when a'fresh speed is being put in, and is provided with means for preventing unintentional reversal. The three parallel sliding rods 11, Figs. 2 and 4, are each provided with a recessed block 12, and any one of the rods may be selected and then operated to give the desired speed by an arm 18 secured to a sleeve 16 carrying the hand operating-lever 15, which moves in a suitable gate quadrant as shown in Figs. 7 and 8. The rods 11 not so selected are locked by a sliding rod 38, which is moved endways by an arm 19 and is provided with a slot located under the arm 18, the rod being held against rotation by a slot on its underside engaging a pin 44. In order that the speed may not be changed unless the clutch is disconnected, the sliding rods 11 are provided with notches 26 which are engaged by a wide spring latch 27 when the rods are all brought to the neutral position. The latch can only be disengaged by link-work connected to the clutch pedal 6. To prevent the accidental engagement of the reverse speed, the wall 46 of the reverse slot in the gate quadrant, Figs. 7 and 8, is formed with a depending lip 47, and the hand-lever is provided with a pawl 48 connected to a spring-held pushrod, so that the lever cannot be moved into the reverse position unless the pawl is depressed. The brake lever 50 is connected with the clutch pedal 6, so that the clutch is released when the brake is applied, by means of a cam 52. The cam is mounted on the inner end of the brake shaft, and bears against a roller 54 on the slotted end of a rod 56 connected to an arm on the clutch pedal shaft.
