Abstract
373,697. Coating and impregnating webs. BEAVER, C. J., Bell Place, Stamford Road, Bowdon, Cheshire, and GLOVER & CO., Ltd., W. T., Trafford Park, Manchester. March 18, 1931, No. 8325. [Class 140.] Apparatus for impregnating and coating webs comprises a drying chamber from which the web is drawn through an aperture into an impregnating tank containing liquid under a higher pressure than that in the drying chamber, and a reservoir within the drying chamber adapted to receive liquid escaping through the aperture from the impregnating tank into the drying chamber. Liquid from this reservoir may be returned to the impregnating tank. The chamber 1, Fig. 1, contains a drum 2 on which is mounted the material to be treated, and guide rollers 3 .. 6 which may be heated. A partition 7 forms a compartment 57 to receive liquid. The impregnating tank 8 is disposed above the chamber 1 and over the compartment 57, and contains guide rollers 9. The tank 8 may be heated. The bottom wall of the tank 8 has an aperture 13, Fig. 3, coinciding with an aperture 21 in the chamber 1. Above the aperture 13 are arranged two rubber blocks 14 secured to holders 15 which can be adjusted so that the rubber blocks make contact with the web passing between them. The web is drawn upwardly from the tank 8, Fig. 1, and passes between scrapers 31 heated by steam coils, and over a roller 26 which dips into a bath of coating material. Thence it passes around a water-cooled roller 35 and is wound on a drum 36. The chamber 1 is connected to a vacuum pump, and is provided with airtight covers 53, 54 for the insertion of the roll of material to be treated. A pump 51 is arranged to return liquid from the compartment 57 to the tank 8. The materials used may be oil in the tank 8 and wax applied by the roller 26. Specification 318,647, [Class 140, Waterproof &c. fabrics], is referred to.
