Abstract

<PICT:0375418/IV/1> <PICT:0375418/IV/2> In a method of treating sheet material such as paper or fabric with varnish or other liquid the liquid is applied while the material is being unwound from one roll and rewound upon another roll while enclosed in an evacuated casing. The rate of winding is regulated so as to allow the liquid to dry before the material is rewound. A vertical casing 1 is provided with a connection 18 to a vacuum pump and contains electric heating units 14 mounted on jointed arms 15. The paper or fabric is unwound from a roll 27 at the bottom of the casing and rolled up on a roll 29 at the top. Mounted to project through removable plates 30 in the lower part of the casing are liquid sprayers 31. Below the sprayers are mounted flat wide tubes 35 projecting upwardly and inwardly into the casing; wicks 36 adjustable by toothed wheels 42 pass through these tubes and dip into liquid in closed casings 37 outside the main casing. Air pressure may be applied to the liquid through valves 40. The liquid may be applied by rollers 52, Fig. 3, which dip into liquid contained in boxes 51 and make close contact with the edges of the openings in the boxes through which they project. The bottom of the casing may be filled with liquid to a level above the top of the roll 27 of material. The material is then wound on to the upper roll, the liquid is withdrawn, heat is applied by means of the units 14, and the material is then rewound from the upper roll on to the roll 27.
