Apparatus for making films.-A machine for making transparent films from viscose or cellulose dissolved in cuprammonium solutions comprises, as shown, a pipe a<1> for supplying the cellulose solution under pressure to a wedge-shaped box a, fitted in its bottom with a slotted opening adjustable in width and length and mounted over or within a vat b which contains the coagulating solution b<1>, the level of which is kept constant in known manner, so that it is either above or just below the slot in box a; a plurality of horizontal rollers c under and over which the film x passes during its passage through the coagulating bath; guide rollers c<2> to guide the film from the bath to a plurality of rollers c<3> mounted to revolve above the bath b and over and under which the film passes, whilst it is being sprayed on both sides with coagulating solution from pipes h; intermediate guide rollers c<2> which allow excess of the coagulating medium to be removed from the full coagulated film; plurality of rollers e<2> mounted above a receptacle d and spray pipes i arranged to spray the film on both sides with water or other suitable fluid in order to remove the last traces of coagulating liquid from the film before it passes by means of guide rollers c<2> to drying cylinders f and thence over the take off roller g to the reeling drum. Auxiliary rollers may be suitably arranged to smooth the film during its passage over the rollers c<3> and e<2>. Some or all of the rollers may be geared or driven together.
