[Class 123 (i).] In a liquid level or depth indicator, a column of liquid is transferred from the container to a gauge tube at a higher level, and placed under the same pressure conditions as in the container. An airtight chamber 10 is provided with a handoperated pump 11, and with the gauge 16 is mounted above the liquid container 12. Pipes 14, 13 communicate with the upper and lower parts of the container respectively. The gauge 16 is enlarged and closed at the top, and an inner pipe 17 is connected to one of the ports of a rotary valve 19. Inlet and exhaust valves 25, 26 are provided at the base of the pump. In operation, the valve 19 is set so that the pump draws air and vapour from pipe 17 and delivers it into the container 12. Liquid rises in the gauge 16 to a height greater than the depth in the container 12, and the valve 19 is then set to connect the pipe 17 with the vent pipe 14, pipe 24, down pipe 13, and pressure pipe 27 so that continued. pumping forces liquid out of the pipe 13, maintains a pressure in the chamber 10 equal to the head of liquid displaced from the pipe 13, and supports a similar column of liquid in the gauge 16.
