Abstract

368,877. Mine roof supports. THOMAS, W., Porth Farm, Rhondda, Glamorgan. Dec. 23, 1930, No. 38755. [Class 20 (ii).] Pit-props or arches for mines are formed of two main members 7, 8, with inclined meeting surfaces 9 which are maintained in locked position by means of a dowel or ball 12 which enters a recess in the upper member and is mounted to slide in a recess 11 of the other member, debris or rubble being placed beneath the locking member. In order to unlock the joint, a sliding sleeve 14 is provided which normally covers discharge apertures 13 for the rubble, but can be slidden downwardly to allow discharge of rubble and lowering of the locking member, so that the joint is free and the prop collapses. To provide for adjustability, a sliding-sleeve extension 19 may be provided supported by a wooden wedge 22 or by means of rubble 25 on the part 8 of the prop.
