Abstract
363,769. Handle-bar control mechanism. MACIEJEWSKI, F. J., 184, Furtheratrasse, Nuremberg, Germany. Oct. 19, 1930, No. 32513. Convention date, July 16. [Class 136 (i).] In control mechanism for motor cycles &c. of the type in which control cables are concealed within the handle-bar and are actuated by the cam curves of a rotary grip, or by handlevers associated with such grip, by means of interior sliding members, the sliding members consist of connecting-rods of such a length that their ends connected to the control cables or hand-levers are located in or near the clamping-rings or closing-members which secure the grip in place, so as to be readily accessible by opening or removing such rings or closing- members. In the construction shown in Figs. 1 and 2, three control cables 1, 1a, 1b pass through the interior of the handle-bar 2, the ends of their casings being secured in a plate 3, which is secured in the end of the handle-bar by a flange 5 on the end of an outer tube 4, secured to the handle-bar by front and rear clamping- collars 6, 7. The inner wire of the cable 1 is clamped by a screw 18 to a slide 17, which is engaged by a finger 16 on a lever 14. The inner wires of the cables la, 1b are connected to slides 20, 20a, which are guided by the collar 7 and an end cap 21, secured by a screw 22, which acts as an inner guide. The slides 20, 20a are actuated respectively through connecting- rods 30, 29 from rotatable cam sleeves 27, 24 secured respectively to a ring 28 rotatable by finger or thumb, and to a rotatable grip 26, which overlaps the sleeve 27. A non-rotatable ring 23 separates the sleeves 27, 24. The slides may be sector-shaped as shown, or may be circular, segmental, flat, &c., or a combination of such forms. The sleeves and grip are acted upon frictionally by corrugated spring rings 31, 31a, and bent flat springs such as 32. By loosening the collar 7 and screwing the screw 22 into the plate 3, the parts may be shifted axially to adjust the brake springs 31, 31a. A spring-pressed contact button 9 for an ignition &c. cable 12 is mounted on the clamping-collar 6. In other constructions, one or more additional slides actuated by a lever, rotatable grip, &c. are mounted at the inner end of the grip. Where a number of control cables are employed, one or more may be passed out through openings in the handlebar near the inner end of the grip for accessibility. The cables may be connected directly to connecting-rods such as 29, without the use of separate slides. The return movement of the control parts may be effected or assisted by a spring mounted around the screw 22. A cam sleeve may be formed with two separate cam curves connected by a non-operative slot, so that two controls may be actuated respectively by forward and reverse rotations. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) describes also (1) the making of the cam sleeves by rolling a sheet-metal blank, and (2) a modification in which a single lever actuates two brakes &c. through a slide carrying an equalizing-pulley over which a control wire is looped. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
