In the form shown for controlling the inlet and exhaust of chambers A, B, C, Figs. 2 and 19, of a hydraulic press, a valve block 300 contains inlet valves 64 .. 67, Fig. 3, exhaust valves 61, 62, 63, and non-return valves 68, 69. The inlet and exhaust valves are opened against spring action by liquid acting on plungers 171, Fig. 6 ; each plunger works in packing washers 241, 251 separated by a plate 800, grooves being provided in the plate through which leakage passes to the exterior. The plungeroperating liquid passes through conduits 151 .. 157 under the control of valves 51 .. 57 operated by cams on a shaft provided with a lever 131 disposed over an indicating dial 222. The valves 51 .. 57 are disposed in a block 58, and each comprises balls 106, 107, Fig. 10, separated by a grooved and perforated rod 102, and acted on by a spring- pressed plunger 110 and a cam-operated plunger 43.
