Abstract
355,539. Door fastenings. SHEA, R., 91, Pretoria Road, Portsmouth. Sept. 12, 1930, No. 27348. [Class 44.] A fastening for vehicle &c. doors is adapted to secure the door in partly or fully-closed position, but when the door is not fully closed it can only be opened after being brought to the fully closed position. As shown, the device comprises a member 2 pivoted at 3 on the door 24 and normally held by a spring 6 in the horizontal position, its free end riding past a keeper 15 pivoted at 16 on a plate 14 in a recess 26 in the post 25. Member 15 is yieldingly held in engaging position by a spring 19, its movement being limited by stops 17, 18, and it has notches 22, 23 so that member 2 may be engaged with the door not quite shut. Release can only be effected by first completely closing the door to engage member 2 behind the free end of keeper 15 as shown, Fig. 2. Release is effected by raising member 2 by suitable means such as a handle or spindle 3, or a vertically moving member engaging member 2 near its free end, or by independent inside and outside handles. Movement of member 2 is limited by stops 4, 5 and may be prevented by a locking device comprising a hooked member 12 oscillated about its pivot 11 by key or other means and adapted to engage a recess in member 2 as shown. Member 12 is held in each of its two positions by a spring 13.
