338,968. Ransomes, Sims, & Jefferies, Ltd., and Garrett, F. A. Aug. 29, 1929. Universal joints.-In a universal joint of the Hooke's type, an oil reservoir is formed by a space within the torquering, whence oil is fed centrifugally to the cross-pins and/or their bearings. In order to avoid defective lubrication and the tendency for grit and water to be drawn into the bearings, the reservoir is provided with an anti. vacuum valve. Bearings for the hardened steel cross-pins 2 are formed by hardened steel closed-ended bushes 3 and hardened steel discs 4. Oil is led by centrifugal action through radial pipes 8 from an oil reservoir 7 having an antivacuum valve 21, which may comprise a spring- pressed leather disc 24 mounted as in Fig. 4, or the surface 6 may'be directly drilled and shouldered to house a metal disc held down by a blade spring. The flow of oil through the pipes may be regulated by means described in Specification 340,434, [Group XXXIV]. The cross-pin bushes are held by forked members having removable bolted caps 26, Fig. 2. Dowels prevent rotation of the bushes and packing 5 is provided. Both inner and outer surfaces 27 of the forks are spherical and the metal thereof is thin and strengthened by light webs. One of the tubular bosses 30 is of large diameter for connecting to a tubular shaft such as is described in Specification 338,967. According to the Provisional Specification, the packing 5 may be a rubber, composition, or metal ring, the bush 3 may be held from rotating by a grub-screw or key, and the pins 2 may have a radiused or coned shoulder where they join the ring.
