Abstract

337,988. Jackson, L. Mellersh-, (Ball Bros. Co.). Nov. 12, 1929. Delivering molten metal.-Relates to a feeder of the kind in which the flow of molten glass through an aperture. 13 in the floor of a forehearth 12 is regulated by variations in the pressure of the air within a vertical tube 15 that dips into the glass above the aperture. The interior of the tube is connected alternately with a reservoir 30 of compressed air and with a vacuum tank 31 through valves 34, 38, respectively, the valves being actuated by a rotating timer 36. The invention consists in constantly admitting, at a slow rate of flow, an additional supply of compressed air to the interior of the tube 15. This may be done by fitting a tube 50 in the main compressed air line to bye-pass the valve 34, and in fitting in the tube 50 a diaphragm 52 perforated with a small hole. Thus there is a constant leakage of compressed air from the reservoir 30 to the tube 15, but this leakage is not sufficient to prevent the retardation of the flow of glass when the tube 15 is connected to the vacuum tank 31.
