Abstract

Variable-speed gearing of the kind in which the speed is varied automatically by the inertia of a mass comprises coaxial driving, driven, and mass members F, H, K<4>, Fig. 3, respectively, the arrangement being such that when driven member H is held fast, the mass member K<4> is driven always forwardly with cyclic variations in speed. A planetary shaft G<2>carried by the member or wheel H is driven through a slider-crank pair F<2>, G<1> from shaft F, and in turn is connected by a slider-crank pair J<1>, K<1> to the shaft of flywheel K<4>. The wheel H transmits power as by a pitch chain at a speed depending on the load. In a form shown in Fig. 5, the driven element M is a toothed wheel, and the mass member 0 has a variable inertia. Weights 0<7> are adapted to fly out centrifugally against a spring 0<8>. The two slider-cranks are replaced by eccentric wheels L<2>, L<3> between driving-shaft L and planetary shaft L<4> and by similar wheels L', N between shaft L<4> and the mass member 0. A planetary cranklinkage for effecting exaggerated cyclic changes and replacing the slider-cranks of Fig. 3 is described.
