Variable-speed friction gearing of the kind comprising gears such as c, d on a driving-shaft a and gears such as e f, on a driven shaft f adapted to be connected in pairs through countershafts carrying similar gears, has the gears provided with grooved frictional engaging surfaces. In the arrangement shown, there are two countershafts g, h supported in a pivoted frame k, and two others i, j y in a second frame k<1>. Reversed driving may be obtained by connecting a pair of gears on one of the countershafts through a toothed reversing-train.
