Abstract
325,534. Standard Telephones &. Cables, Ltd., and Bedford, L. H. Nov.- 16,1928. Vacuum tubes.-An alumino-thermic reaction product containing a pure. alkaline-earth or rareearth metal and alumina is introduced into an evacuated or partially evacuated container such as an electric discharge device and the metal subsequently vaporized. The product may be protected against oxidation or hydration by means of a saturated hydrocarbon or any coating which is removed by heating in vacuo. In one example 500 grams of a mixture of barium monoxide, barium peroxide, and aluminium powder (proportions given) are placed in an iron pot and ignited by means of a magnesium ribbon in conjunction with a fuse powder which may be a mixture of barium peroxide and aluminium. The pot may subsequently be filled with alumina.. The cooled product may be broken out and stood under paraffin wax, and, when required for use, may be ground with paraffin wax and applied as a paste to a recess in a valve plate &c. and secured therein by a cover plate.
