Abstract

A pyrophoric composition comprises 20-75 per cent Pb and 25-80 per cent Zr the total content of Pb and Zr being not less than 60 per cent. The composition may contain also Ti e.g. 10-20 per cent and/or one or more of the metals Fe, Ni, Co, Mg, Al, Sb, Mn and Sn. A method of making the composition comprises heating a mixture of small pieces of Pb and Zr in an inert atmosphere e.g. to 1350 DEG -1600 DEG C until the whole is liquefied and thereafter cooling the composition. Thus the melting may take place in a vessel which is evacuated and then filled with inert gas. Zr may be partly or wholly added in the form of its hydride. Ti, when used, may be added either as metal or as its hydride.
