404,111. Discharge apparatus. INTERNATIONAL GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Inc., 120, Broadway, New York, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Allgemeine Elektricitats-Ges. ; 2, Friedrich Karl-Ufer, Berlin.) Oct. 24, 1932, No. 29716. Convention date, Oct. 22, 1931. [Class 39 (i).] Zirconium, for use as a getter, is introduced into a discharge tube by applying to the anode or other electrode, the hydride or another compound of the metal which is capable of reduction during evacuation with the evolution of a non-deleterious gas, such as hydrogen, which is removed. The hydride is made into a paste with a binder of a volatile hydrocarbon, such as xylol, with paraffin. Nickel may be used. as a porous intermediate carrier forming an alloy with zirconium, or its surface may be roughened. A mixture of compounds of zirconium and other metals such as tantalum, which do not form crystals, may be used. The part of the electrode to be treated may be glowed in hydrogen. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 267,902, [Class 39 (i), Electric lamps, Arc &c.].
