Abstract

In a process for the reduction of materials containing one or both of the metals tantalum and niobium in oxide form by means of metallic reducing agents, for example one or more of the metals calcium, aluminium, and magnesium, the reducing metal is in molten form when introduced into the reaction vessel, which is preferably an electric furnace heated externally before and after the introduction of the molten reducing agent. The reducing agent may be used in such an amount as to obtain a selective separation of niobium from tantalum, and a metal such as iron may be added so as to obtain alloys directly.
