Abstract

550,848. Coating with metals. MULLARD RADIO VALVE CO., Ltd., HOORN, A. J. VAN., and THURMER, G. July 24, 1941, No. 9414. [Class 82(ii)] [Also in Groups XL, XI and XXVIII] A device for vaporizing metals for the production of thin layers of the metals by condensation or for gettering in evacuated apparatus, consists of a core of high melting point material adapted to be heated electrically and provided with a helical channel in which the metal to be vaporized is placed. The core may be a wire of high melting point, e.g. tungsten, and the channel formed integrally therewith or by an open wound simple or multiple helix of the same or insulating material. The metal to be vaporized may be wound in the channel in the form of wire or mixed with a binder in the form of a paste. Where two or more metals, e.g. zirconium and tantalum, are to be vaporized simultaneosuly, the multiple helix wound with wires of the separate metals and a further wire of a metal such as tungsten as a support may be used. Alternatively, the core wires and the wires of the metal to be vaporized are wound together in the form of a stranded cable. When applied to gettering, the core and the vaporizable metal are mounted in the vacuum space which it then sealed, and the core is heated by induction.
