Abstract

Cylinders, ports of and pipes for.-In a two-strokecycle engine cylinder having opposed banks 14, 16 of piston-controlled inlet and exhaust ports, the central inlet ports 34 are directed towards the cylinder head, e.g. at 30‹ to the axis, and the end ports 30 are transverse but directed towards the inlet side of the cylinder; the intermediate ports 32 may be between these two elevations, e.g. at 45‹ to the axis. One or more of the oblique ports may be longer than the exhaust ports, to supercharge the cylinder; these ports are connected by spring-closed or engine-driven valves to a source of high-pressure air. If the invention is applied to a double-acting engine having pistons with concave faces, the same ports may serve for both ends, the oblique ports directing the air towards the piston in the lower half; the ports may be forced as shown in Fig. 15 to direct the air to both cylinder heads.
