Abstract

359,553. Cylinders ; valves. CURTIS, C. G., Rector Street, and NEWTON, E. R., 37, Compton Terrace, Jamaica, both in New York, U.S.A. July 25, 1930, No. 22444. Convention date, July 29, 1929. [Classes 7 (ii) and 7 (vi).] Two-stroke engine cylinders have two banks of piston-controlled inlet ports, viz., ports 18, arranged tangentially, and ports 16, arranged to direct the air along the inlet side of the cylinder; the latter ports may be formed as described in Specification 321,514, [Class 7 (ii), Internal combustion engines, Arrangement &c. of]. The inclination of the ports 16 is gradually reduced towards the ends of the bank where they may be transverse to the cylinder; alternatively the whole bank may be transverse. The passages supplying the two banks are connected through a non-return valve 46, but supercharging air may be admitted past an engine-driven valve 52, a hand-actuated throttle valve 54 being also provided. The ports 18 may be arranged to be uncovered simultaneously with the exhaust ports 14. In a double-acting engine, the ports 14, 16 serve for both ends of the cylinder, and the ports 18 are duplicated.
