Single - acting bucket pumps; regulating delivery by opening bye-passes and suction valves.- In a fuel pump for internalcombustion engines, the delivery is regulated by opening a bye-pass, valve 20 in a plunger 10 for a variable period during the delivery stroke of the plunger by means of adjustable stationary abutments 23, 24 which engage a tappet 22 on the valve. The fuel enters the pump barrel during the suction stroke through a pipe 2, ports 19 controlled by the valve 20, port 18 and a passage in the plunger. During the delivery stroke while the valve 20 is held open by the abutments, the fuel returns from the barrel 4 through the plunger and ports 18, 19 to a bye-pass 3, and during the remainder of the stroke it is returned through a valve 6 to the engine. In another form ballvalves project through holes in the plunger and are engaged by abutments on adjustable sleeves surrounding the plungers. In another form a bye-pass valve separate from the plunger is operated through adjustable tappets by abutments on the plunger, and in another form, the abutments are on angularly adjustable sleeves carried by the plunger.
