Abstract

524,098. Fuel injection pumps. KAMMER, G. S. Jan. 21, 1939, No. 2182. [Class 102 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] In a fuel-injection system for an internalcombustion engine in which an accumulator is associated with a pump and the spring-pressed valve of a fuel injector is opened by the'pressure in a branch of the fuel-supply line, the valve is held closed solely by its spring acting against the pressure of the fuel. A cam-actuated valve controls the admission and discharge of the operating fluid to and from a piston chamber of the injection valve. As shown in Fig. 1, a pump plunger 5 delivers fuel to the space 11 above an accumulator piston 12, which is depressed against the action of a spring 13 until an inclined edge on a collar 18 engages a bell-crank lever 22, which through a spring- pressed piston 17 opens a valve 14 to connect a passage 8 to the suction line 7 of the pump. To vary the fuel pressure at which the valve 14 is opened the piston 12 is rotated by a worm 21 on a governor-controlled shaft 20. The fuel to be injected traverses passages 26, 26a to the space 46 beneath an injector valve 47 Fig. 4 which is held closed by a spring 52 until fuel is admitted through a passage 35 to a space 56 below a piston 51 connected to the valve. The time of admission to the space 56 is controlled by a valve 36 Fig. 2 disposed between the passages 26, 35. When the valve 31 is closed, the pressure in the space 56 is reduced by connecting it through a passage 44 and a passage 43 to the suction line 7, but when the valve 31 is raised by a cam 27 on the shaft 1 it closes the passage 44. The cam may be adjusted along the shaft 1 and may produce two fuel injections per cycle. One valve 31 is provided for each injection valve. The fuel pump and/or the accumulator may be duplicated and non-return valves may be provided to prevent loss of fuel due to the failure of a pump or an accumulator.
