Abstract

Tea, breaking or cutting.-Apparatus for cutting tea leaves or stalks &c. comprises a rotating cylinder with peripheral projections in the form of cubes arranged in lines around the cylinder and a stationary plate or knife which may be in sections and has teeth on one edge which correspond with the grooves between the projections on the cylinder. As shown, Figs. 1 and 2, the cylinder 8 with peripheral cube-shaped projections 9 is mounted on a shaft 7 supported in bearings 6 in vertical end-plates 1, 2, which are connected at their upper ends to a hopper 4 bv means of screws 5. The knife 12 with teeth 13 which fit the circumferential grooves between the projections 9 is adjustably fixed to a supporting-plate 10 connected to the plates 1, 2. Slots 15 are provided in the knife 12 through which the securing-screws 14 pass. The plate 12 may be caused to vibrate about a centre to allow nails &c. to pass without damaging the cylinder or plate. The plate 16 which closes the opposite side of the hopper 4 is carried by a support 17 which is screwed at its ends to the plates 1, 2. Teeth are also provided on the plate 16 to fit between the projections 9. The projections 9 may be formed by grooving the cylinder circumferentially and longitudinally, and the teeth 13 may have parallel sides or they may be made slightly wider at their front edges. Fig. 5 shows the cube-shaped projections 9 formed on detachable base-plates 20 which are provided with perforated end-lugs 21 to receive the securing-screws 22. Or the cylinder mav consist of a number of toothed discs separated by plain discs of smaller diameter. A cylinder built up of discs 25, Fig. 7, each of which has a circular plain part 26 and a part 27 of larger diameter with cube-shaped projections 9 may be used.
