Decorticating apparatus for leaves, such as those of sisal, comprises means for holding the leaves, rotating members between which the leaves are passed axially while held by appropriate means and heater members disposed between the rotating members and effective to remove from the leaves the soft or waste material. The beaters E are mounted between two plates A, B of different diameters and are secured to carrier bars D located between filler bars also mounted between the plates A, B, but radially adjustable to alter the angle of presentation of the leaves to the beaters E. Each carrier bar D has three beaters E secured to it, the middle beater being laterally adjustable. Two cover plates are provided, one of which acts as the backing plate and two beater assemblies operate in succession on opposite end portions of leaves.
