Abstract

Variable-speed epicyclic gearing comprises a clutch 4, 5 for solid driving and a separate lay shaft such as 6, 7, 8 for each reduced forward speed, each such speed being brought into action by holding fast a separate loose sun gear such as 11, 21, 17. The lay shafts 6, 7, 8 are supported in a carrier 9 fast upon a driving-shaft 1. In the arrangement shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a a single sun gear 14 fast on the driven shaft 2 meshes with planet gears 13, 13<a>, 13<b> fast on each of the lay shafts respectively. A second gear 12, 22, 18 on each of the lay shafts meshes with a separate loose sun gear 11, 21, 17, which can be held severally by applying a brake to an external drum to bring in the reduced speeds. The lay shaft 7 has a third gear 26 meshing with a loose sun gear 25 which can be held fast for reversed driving. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 3, the triply-meshed driven gear 14 is replaced by three separate gears 14<a>, 14b, 14<c>, fast on the shaft 2 and meshing separately with the planet gears 13, 13a, 13b.
