Abstract

438,459. Variable speed gearing. CLAYTON, A. C., 64, Church Road, Willesden, London. May 28, 1934, No. 15906. [Class 80 (ii)] Relates to gearing, particularly of the kind described in Specifications 412,757 and 429,768, which comprises a plurality of connected or integrally formed planet pinions mounted in a rotatable carrier, and in geared connection with input and output sun-wheels and with one or more annular wheels adapted to be freed and arrested to effect gear changes, the carrier being provided with an idle pinion meshing with a planet pinion and with an annular wheel. According to the invention an auxiliary input sun-wheel is provided to obtain an overdrive when required. An input sun-wheel 1 gears with planets 2 integral with layshafts 3 and other planets 4. The layshafts 3 are mounted in a rotatable carrier 5 which also carries idle pinions 6. The planets 2 mesh directly with annular reaction wheel 7, but the planets 4 are in gear with annular reaction wheel 8 through the idle pinions 6. An output sun 9 gears with planets 4 and is integral with a short shaft 10. The carrier 5 has clutch teeth 11, and a sleeve 12 splined on shaft 10 has teeth 13. These teeth may be engaged singly or together by teeth 15 on a sliding member 14. The wheels 7, 8 are arrested to give the speed changes by roller or ball detents 19 as described in Specification 429,768. The input sun-wheel 1 is integral with a sleeve 20 with clutch teeth 21. The auxiliary input sun-wheel 25 meshes with planets 26 integral with layshafts 3, and is integral with a sleeve 27 journalled on sleeve 20 and provided with clutch teeth 29. The teeth 21, 29 may be engaged separately by teeth 24 on a clutch member 23 splined on driving shaft 22. With either wheel 1 or 25 in use, a range of speeds may be produced by the braking members. The detents 19 and clutch member 14 may be actuated with the clutch member 23.
