Abstract

264,327. Tawlks, T. H. Jan. 23, 1926. Clutches, friction.-In band clutches for heavy machinery, such as winches, cranes, grabs, and excavators, engagement is effected and maintained by retarding a loose brake drum l, an extension of which is connected by a rod k. to a lever g, pivoted on the driving-member and adapted to operate the clutch directly. The band d is anchored at e on the driving-wheel a and connected to the lever g at a point f near its fulcrum, the driven member c being secured to a shaft m on which the wheel a and drum l are free. The band d is normally held out of action by a spring j, but is applied on tightening a brake-strap n by hand or foot actuated linkage o - - q. In a modification, an internally-expanding shoe brake is employed.
