Clutches, friction. - In contracting - band clutches for mine hauling and winding drums &c., the driven member b, adapted to receive a brake strap, is provided with a pair of inwardly-directed abutments l, one of which is engaged, according to the direction of rotation, by one of the lugs f on the ends of the band e encircling the driving- member d. A bell-crank actuating-lever h, pivoted on one of the lugs f and connected to the other by an adjustable link g, is operated through a thrust-rod k by a sliding collar i. The arrangement of the abutments l ensures self-tightening of the band in either direction of rotation. The band is supported when slack by studs m.
