Stuffing-boxes, subsbitutes for.-In packing for stern-tubes &c. of the type in which a packing- containing member 20 is pressed axially by springs 19 in a clamp 14 engaging a sleeve 12 on the shaft, and engages a radial surface on a ball-jointed ring 28, the ring 28 is arranged radially external to the member 20 and its gland 21. the member 20 having a flange engaging the radial surface of the ring 28. The spherical surface of the ring 28 engages a similar surface on a cover 30 secured to the casing attached to the stern-tube, rotation of the ring being prevented by a lug 35 on the ring engaging between pins 36 in the cover. The clamp 14 is formed with corrugations 18 engaging similar corrugations on the sleeve 12. The clamp is formed in three sections bolted together, keys clamped between the sections engaging slots in the sleeve 12. In a modification, the corrugations 18 are replaced by bevelled engaging surfaces on the clamp and sleeve.
