Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for.-Packing for relatively rotating bodies comprises ribs relatively not liable to expansion on the one body co-operating with external cylindrical, conical, or partly cylindrical and partly conical members on the other body so arranged that if rubbing takes place the clearance is increased by expansion. The external flanges 3, Fig. 4, may be of angular section and may be secured in grooves 4 in the external part. Each flange 3 may be co-operate with a single rib 1 on the internal part and the latter may be of varying heights. Alternatively each flange 3, Fig. 6, may co-operate with two or more ribs 1 and may carry a flange 7 prujecting between the ribs 1. The flanges 3, Fig. 10, may be of U-section and may be arranged in pairs oppositely disposed. In a modification the flanges 3, Fig. 11, are formed on roots 8 slid into undercut grooves in the external part and may be conical, or of cylindrical form, as shown. Packing or springs may be placed in the recesses 10 at the back of the roots 8. Cylindrical parts 1, Fig. 19, carried by flanges 12 on the revolving part may co-operate with radial flanges 3 on the roots 8. Alternatively, conical ribs 1 on the flanges 12 may co-operate with the extremities of axial flanges 3 on the roots 8. The conical ribs 1 may be carried on conical faces of the flanges 12. The ribs 1 may be replaced by steps on the revolving part.
