Abstract
227,536. General Electric Co., Ltd., and Pochobradsky, B. Oct. 20, 1923. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; connected to source of high or low pressure. - Packing for the rotating parts of turbmes, rotary pumps, compressors, &c. consists or ribs or rings on the stationary and rotating parts with sharp edges in close proximity and having large surfaces exposed to the steam. The ribs may be of varying height in order to form a tortuous path for leakage. The ribs may be formed directly on the stationary and rotating parts, or on sleeves a, b, Fig. 1, secured to the parts. The sleeves may be so secured as to permit radial and axial expansion. For this purpose a radial flange on a nut g engages a flange on one end of the sleeve a, an axial flange e on a nut d engaging the other end of the sleeve. The sleeve is further secured by four keys f 90‹ apart. The sleeve b is located by a middle rib r engaging a recess s in the casing and at each end has a flange k with a rib l engaging a rib m on the casing. The periphery of each flange k is engaged by a flexible ring n. Sealing steam may be admitted from the space s to a space t in the packing, leakage escaping from a space u in the packing to a passage v. In a modification the ribs are replaced by rings c, c', Fig. 7, separated by spacing pieces z, z<1>. Baffle rings b<1> may alternate with the rings c<1>. Specifications 24936/08, 25466/08, [both in Class 122, Steam engines.]; 14606/09, 162,075, and 173,446 are referred to.
