Cylinders receiving liquid fuel.-A combustion chamber f, separated by a restricted passage g from the cylinder, is scavenged by air compressed by an auxiliary pump k to a higher pressure than the main charge of scavenging air, which enters through terminal ports c. The compressed air from the pump k enters the combustion chamber f through a small fluid pressure actuated valve i, and is stored during the intervals between scavenging periods in a reservoir p. The air enters the reservoir p through a small orifice o, the object of which is to prevent admission of any appreciable quantity of air from the pump during the scavenging period, in order to ensure the closing of the valve i during the period of opening of the main scavenging ports c. If supercharging of the cylinder is desired, the reservoir p is omitted, and the size of the pump k increased ; air will then be admitted through the valve i until the pressure in the cylinder is equalized with that of the auxiliary scavenging charge, after the commencement of the compression stroke.
