Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid.-In apparatus for indicating liquid level at a distance, the pressure necessary to force air into the liquid at the bottom of a tank is communicated to a liquid manometer. The tank 2 is provided with a tube 1 opening at the bottom into a small vessel 3 containing glycerine or mercury, and provided with a diaphragm 4 which is pervious to the liquid b but not to the liquid a. Another diaphragm 6 is pervious to air and to the liquid b. The tube 1 is connected by a pipe 7 to a pump 8 having a spring piston 9 carrying a rod 11 and a valve closing the port 13. The chamber 15 contains a piston valve 19 controlling a duct 22 which places the ports 16, 17 in communication. The manometer comprises a chamber 20 connected to a flat gauge vessel 23 containing glycerine. The chamber 23 is provided with a glass front 24, the outline of which corresponds to that of the tank 2, e.g. a petrol tank, so that the quantity of liquid in the tank may be estimated. When the piston 9 is pulled out and then released, it forces air through the pipe 7 into the liquid b until the rod 11 reaches the piston 19 and pushes it back to uncover the duct 22. The pressure of the air is then communicated to the gauge 23, and the level, with any subsequent variation, is indicated continuously. Specification 232,931 is referred to.
