Indicators actuated by pressure of head of liquid.-The liquid level in a container is indicated by causing a definite increase in a space connected to an open-ended tube dipping into the liquid, and measuring the resulting decrease in air pressure. The variations in air pressure of the space due to fluctuations of level may also be used to indicate the level. The open-ended tube 3 has an enlargement 5, and is connected to a hand pump 1 and manometer 6, which may be at a distance. The two sides of the piston 9 are connected by a passage 8 to equalize pressures in the position shown. When the piston is moved to the right, the passage 8 is closed, and liquid is drawn up towards the vessel 5 to an extent dependent on the liquid level in the tank 4. The reduction of pressure shown on the gauge 6 is an indication of the liquid level. In a modification, the vessel 11, Fig. 3, is provided with a diaphragm 12, permeable to the liquid in the tank, e.g. petrol, and not to the liquid in the tube 3<1>, e.g. glycerine, or mercury. After operating the pump, a valve between the pump and manometer is closed and the changes in level are then continuously indicated. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 (3) (a) comprises also a sensitive form of manomerter suitable for indicating the small pressure differences obtained. The chamber 13, Fig. 4 (Cancelled), is subjected to the pressure to be measured, and the diaphragm 15 carries a small piston 16 moving in a tube 17 connected to another chamber 18 containing glycerine. An increased pressure is thus transmitted to the diaphragm of the chamber 18. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
