Abstract

285,307. Clark, D'A. M., (Bendix Brake Co.). July 9, 1927. Blocks and shoes acting on drums; blocks and shoes; compensating for wear.-A construction of brake shoe, particularly for an internal drum brake, comprises an arcuate band for carrying the friction lining, a pair of spaced stiffening flanges secured to the band and a reinforcing member, preferably of channel section and disposed parallel to the band, secured to the flanges. A separate reinforcing member may be secured to that portion of the flanges which forms a pivot arm for the shoe. As shown in Fig. 1, the brake comprises shoes 24, 26 pivoted to the backing plate respectively at 30 and 34 and a shoe 28 connected to the shoe 26 by a floating pivot 52. The shoes are applied to the drum by a cam 68, Fig. 3 engaging rollers 72 on the shoes 24, 28 and carried by a shaft 70 mounted on a plate 76 secured to the backing plate 22 by bolts 78 which pass through slots in the backing plate to permit the cam to centre with respect to the shoes when the brake is applied. The cam is provided with a central rib 74 projecting between the rollers 72 to position the shoes laterally. To maintain a predetermined amount of clearance between the shoe 26 and the drum, the forked end of a member 56 pivoted at 58 with frictional resistance to the backing plate 22 embraces the grooved end of the pivot 52. If the movement of the shoe 26 in applying the brake exceeds the play provided between the pivot 52 and the fork the member 56 is turned on its pivot 58 and the shoe is thus adjusted. The shoe 26 comprises a lining-carrying band 82, Fig. 8, to which is secured, as by welding, a pair of flanges 80. A reinforcing member 88 of channel-section is secured to the flanges 80, preferably as shown at their inner edges. The flanges of the member 88 may be disposed between the flanges 80 as shown or at the outer side of these flanges. A separate channel-section member 92 may be secured to that part of the flanges 80 which forms the pivot arm of the shoe. The ends of the flanges 80 are secured to a bushing 90, Fig. 5, sleeved on the pivot 34. The shoe 24 comprises a pair of flanges secured to the lining-carrying band and straddling the ends of the flanges of the shoe 26. The shoe 28 has a single flange which is attached to the pivot 52 by a bushing lying between bushings secured to the ends of the two flanges of the shoe 26.
