324,146. Wrench, J. M. D. Nov. 1, 1928. Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; glands; packing, metallic.-Segmental packing-rings 8 are housed in cylindrical rings 11, spaced by discs 10, and clamped between end rings 12, 14, having spherical surfaces engaging conical surfaces on the cylinder cover 2 and on a ring 17 let into the gland 3. To facilitate removal, the rings 12, 14 are formed with peripheral grooves, or with shoulders 29. A felt or like ring 19 in a recess in the gland is supplied with lubricant from a cup 21. The packing is housed in a casing comprising an end flange 1<b>, let into a recess in the cover 2, and a ring 27, the flange and ring being connected by bars 7, spaced by slots 6. Longitudinal ribs may be formed on the bars 7, engaging the rings 10, 11, 12, 14, and the discs 10 may be recessed adjacent the outer peripheries of the rings 8. In a modification, the casing is formed integral with the cover 2, and the gland bolts 25 engage a flange on the ring 27.
