Abstract

The clip which serves for mounting structural or operational members such as for example cables, decorative or trim strips or other motor vehicle components on a panel (3) is provided with a base portion (1) which bears against the plate or panel (3), an L-shaped holding lug (5) which engages resiliently behind an edge (9) of the hole, and a retaining element (7,8) which is bent towards the plate or panel (3) and which bears against the oppositely disposed edge portion (10) of the hole and which snaps into position when the spring clip is fitted in the hole (4) and thereby secures the spring clip in its position. So that the spring clip can be fitted into the hole (4) so as to be immovable under operative conditions, even when taking account of disadvantageous production tolerances, while at the same time it can be easily assembled, the retaining element is formed as a support lug (7) which can be sprung up substantially parallel to the plane of the plate or panel, with an end (8) which is bent over in the opposite direction to the direction of latching engagement and which, in the condition of latching engagement, bear springily against the rearward edge portion (10) of the hole. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Spring clip which can be fixed in a hole in a plate or panel This invention relates to a spring clip which can be fixed in a hole in a plate or panel, for mounting structural or operational members such as for example cables, trim or decorative strips or other motor behicle components on the plate or panel.
The spring clip is provided with a bottom portion operative to bear against the plate or panel, an Lshaped holding lug projecting from the base position and operative to engage resiliently behind an edge portion of the hole, and a retaining element which is bent away from the base portion and, in operation, towards the plate or panel, which is operative in a retaining position to bear against the oppositely disposed edge portion of the hole and which snaps into position when the spring clip is fitted in the hole and thereby secures the spring clip in position.
In the spring clip which is disclosed for example in German patent specification No. 963 930, the retaining element is in the form of a short abutment portion which is stamped out of the bottom of the clip and which is bent downwardly and which, depending on the production tolerances in the clip and the fixing hole, latches with a greater or small amount of clearance against the edge of the hole.
Although that is immaterial in many situations involving a fixing action, nonetheless, and more particularly in the motor vehicle industry, situations arise in which a fixed, immovable fit is essential for the spring clip when installed.
There is thus a need for a generally improved spring clip which, even when taking into consideration the production tolerances or the worst variations in dimensions within such tolerances, may be immovably fitted into a fixing hole, while ensuring easy assembly.
According to the present invention, there is provided a spring clip which can be fixed in a hole in a plate or panel, for mounting structural or operational members, including a base portion operative to bear against the plate or panel, an L- shaped holding lug projecting from the base portion and operative to engage resiliently behind an edge portion of the hole, and a retaining element which is bent away from the base portion and, in operation, towards the plate or panel and which is operative in a retaining position to bear against the oppositely disposed edge portion of the hole, wherein the retaining element is formed as a support lug which can be sprung up substantially normal to the plane of the plate or panel for insertion or removai of the holding lug on or from the hole edge portion and has an end which is bent over in the opposite direction to the direction of retaining engagement and which, in the retaining position, bears springily against said oppositely disposed edge pportion of the hole.
In this arrangement, the support lug should extend over the entire length or width of the fixing hole so that it can latch into the hole with a maximum amount resiliency.
For this reason, in accordance with another feature of the invention, the support lug preferably is formed at the end of the L-shaped holding lug and from there is bent away from the base portion and operatively around towards the support edge portion. This provides the support lug with a greater bending length, and is thus easier to assemble.
Furthermore, from the point of view of assembly and the fit of the spring clip, it is advantageous if the bent over end is provided with an edge strip portion which is bent over away from the direction of the bent over end so as to serve as an abutment against the plate when the support lug is sprung into the hole in the plate. This arrangement makes it possible for the support lug, upon manufacture, to be bent downwardly to such an extent that, upon assembly of the spring clip, the support lug draws itself of its own accord into the hole until reaching the position of bearing against the edge, with the bent over end being bent back by the edge of the hole.
For a better understanding of the present invention, and to show how the same may be carried into effect, reference will now be made, by way of example, to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 is a side view of a spring clip according to the invention, in association with a sectioned apertured plate or panel, before installation of the clip in the plate aperture, Figure 2 shows the spring clip of Figure 1 during installation in the aperture or hole in the plate or panel, Figure 3 shows the spring clip of Figures 1 and 2 after installation in the hole in the plate, Figure 4 is a sectional view of a spring clip according to another embodiment of the invention, Figure 5 shows the spring clip of Figure 4 after being fitted into the hole in a plate or panel, and Figure 6 shows the spring clip of Figures 4 and 5 after being fitted into the hole in a plate or panel with the rearward edge of the hole at a lower level.
A spring clip of the invention as illustrated in the drawings includes a base portion 1 with a holding portion 2 formed thereon, and serves for mounting structural or operational members on a carrier plate or panel 3 which for that purpose is provided with a hole 4 that is preferably square or rectangular in shape.
An L-shaped holding lug 5 projects downwardly from the base portion 1. The holding lug 5 in use engages resiliently behind an edge portion 9 of the fixing hole 4, and thereby fixes the spring clip against movement in a vertical direction. Also provided on the base portion 1 is a slightly downwardly inclined support lug 7 which extends away from the holding lug 5 and which has an upwardly bent over end 8. After the spring clip has been pushed into position, as shown in Figures 2 and 3, the end 8 bears under a spring force against a support edge portion 10 on the oppositely disposed side of the hole 4. In this arrangement, the bent over end of the support lug 7 is provided with an end or edge strip portion 11 which is bent over in the opposite direction to the direction of retaining engagement and which serves as an abutment when the support lug 7 is sprung into the hole 4.
In order also to ensure that the spring clip is immovably fitted in position in the direction of the plane of the plate or panel, the bent-over end 8 of the support lug 7 is inclined by such an angle ,' with respect to the support lug 7 that the spacing "a" between the upper end 8 of the support lug and the abutment limb portion 6 of the holding lug 5 is at least somewhat larger than the maximum spacing "b", due to tolerances, between the two support surfaces 9 and 10 of the fixing hole 4. That provides that, when the support lug is pressed in, the bent-over end 8 of the support lug is in any case bent back somewhat and bears with a spring force against the edge 10 of the hole, corresponding to the aperture angle d which is now smaller, while the support lug 7 bears almost in a straight line against the edge 10 of the hole.
Figures 4 to 6 show another embodiment of a spring clip of the invention wherein the support lug 7 is formed at the end of the L- shaped holding lug 5 and from there is bent over in the opposite direction, that is to say, towards the support edge portion 10.
As can be seen from Figures 5 and 6, this lug 7 also bears in a straight line against the edge 10 of the hole. However, it is substantially longer than that shown in Figure 1 so that it is somewhat softer or more flexible in its action, upon fitting the clip. In addition, the width "b" of the hole maybe made somewhat smaller and quite particularly in the construction shown in Figure 6 where the rearward edge 10 of the hole is at a lower level than the forwarded edge 9. That occurs for example in plastics housings or casings (for example in a glove box).
Figure 6 also shows the lower edge 12 of a lid or cover 13 which latches by means of an opening 14 into the bent-in holding portion of the spring clip.
The use of this spring clip is not restricted just to the situation referred to in the opening part of this specification, where an immovable fit is required.
The spring clip may also be satisfactorily used wherever the resilient holding elements are intended to lie as flat as possible against the carrier plate or plane, and where there is a requirement for particularly easy assembly.
