Abstract

215,579. Sleigh, H. L., Cheston, A. S., and Edmonds, E. C. May 15, 1923. Latches, sliding. - In a latch fastening for motor vehicle &c. doors of the type in which an extension of the handle engages the latch or part carried thereby so that the latch can be withdrawn by turning the handle, the latter being retained in its normal position when the door is slammed by a spring-controlled slide, the slide is housed in a recess in the latch and is provided with an opening through which the handle passes. The spring-shot latch bolt 1 is formed with a channel 6 terminating in a slot 7 and formed with ledges 8 on which a slotted member 9 is adapted to slide, the end of the slide 9 extending into the slot 7 being formed with a projecting lug 10 which projects through a slot 11 in the latch casing 2. A coil spring 12 mounted in the slot in the slide between the lug 13 and a stop 14 on the casing 2 tends to urge the slide outwards. The extension 16 on the handle 15 passes through the slots in the casing, slide and latch bolt, its hooked end being engaged with a bridge-piece 4 secured to the casing 2. The latch bolt 1 is withdrawn against its spring 5, on turning the handle 15, by the slide 9 engaging the inner end of the slot 7. When the bolt 1 is withdrawn on the door being slammed, however, as shown in Fig. 5, the handle 15 is held in its normal position by the slide 9, the lug 10 being held by the spring 12 closely against the edge of the extension 16 of the handle.
