Abstract

Disclosed is a self-contained vertical motion compensation unit adapted to be carried by a crane hook 19 between the crane hook and the load 14. The unit includes a cylinder and piston assembly 22, 26 which supports the load on a compensated hook 126 and automatically varies the distance between the crane hook and the compensated hook to compensate for relative vertical movement of a platform 11 supporting the crane and a platfrom 15 to or from which the load is to be transferred. Sensors 110 which generate a signal in response to vertical movement are associated with each platform which is movable with respect to the other platform. Signals from the sensors 110 are used to control the position of the piston in the cylinder and thereby vary the vertical separation between the compensated hook 126 and the crane hook 19 in relation to relative vertical movement between the crane boom 17 and the landing platform 15. <IMAGE>
