Abstract

197,034. Moore, M. S. Feb. 7, 1922. Coal-cutting machines.-In a coal cutting machine provided with running wheels and a supporting skid, either of which may support the machine, the machine is hinged at one end to the skid and means such as jacks are provided for adjusting the machine relatively to the skid so as to bring the wheels into or out of engagement with the rails or ground. The cutter-bar machine shown is pivoted at 27 to a skid 24 and carries two pairs of wheels 5, 6 connected by chain and sprocket gearing. Manually-operated screw jacks 33 connect the rear of the machine to the skid: in lowering the machine, the front wheels 5 first contact with the rails &c. The rear-wheel axle may be driven from the motor shaft 13 through gears 14, 15, worm gearing 18, three pinions 19, 20, 12 of which the centre pinion 20 is slidable to permit disengagement, and bevel gearing 10. According to the Provisional Specification, the wheel-driving gear may comprise a bevel gear adapted to be clutched to a vertical driving shaft and driving one wheel axle through a horizontal shaft and bevel gearing.
