Abstract

196,056. Griffiths, E., and Armstrong, Whitworth, & Co., Ltd., Sir W. G. Jan. 11, 1922. Jib cranes.-To maintain the load at a fixed height during luffing, the hoisting rope passes from the load over a sheave at the jib head, thence round a sheave on the crane superstructure, and then back to an intermediate sheave mounted on the jib above the line joining the jib head and jib pivot, the rope being reeved as many times as desirable round the superstructure and intermediate pulleys before passing to the winding drum. The figure shows the invention applied to a crane of the overtruss type in which the jib forms an isosceles triangle. The hoisting rope passes over the single head sheave 4 and a ,guide sheave, 5 at the apex of the triangle to one of a series of sheaves 6 at the top of the post and then is reeved as many times as is necessary round pulleys 11 connected by a link 10 to the apex of the jib and the pulleys 6 before passing to the winding drum 7. In a modification, the link 10 and pulleys 11 are omitted, and the rope is reeved directly round multiple pulleys 5, 6.
