Abstract

522,873. Variable-speed gears. COMPAGNIE CROIX. and BOYER, L. March 10, 1939, No. 7762. [Class 80 (ii)] A three-speed hub gear for cycles comprises a driving crankshaft 3 to which is secured a carrier 4 carrying planet pinions 6. The planets 6 are in engagement with a sun gear 7 and an annulus 9 which are freely mounted upon the crankshaft 3 and are integral with hollow shafts 8 and 10 extending over half the length of the shaft 3. These hollow shafts 8 and 10 are in driving engagement with a driven hub 19 by means of one-way clutch devices comprising pawls 24, 25 and ratchet wheels 26, 27 and are also adapted to be selectively held by pawls 28 or 29 cooperating with ratchet wheels 30, 31 and operable by the rider through a flexible cable or other suitable means. When both the braking pawls 28, 29 are free the shaft 3 drives the hub 19 in direct drive through the epicyclic gear and both one-way devices. By holding either of the shafts 8 or 10 of the sun or annulus by means of the pawls 28, 29 an increased speed is obtained through the one-way device of the other member. Thus three speeds in all are obtained.
